Do you ever feel like your life is dictated by routines as if you’re following a pre-programmed script?
Does it seem like you’re moving through your days on autopilot, performing tasks without real thought or intention?
If so, you’re not alone. Many of us get so caught up in daily demands that we forget to make space for ourselves. When we live on autopilot, we go through the motions—waking up, getting ready, going to work, coming home, scrolling through social media, and going to bed—without much awareness or engagement.
Over time, this pattern becomes second nature, and we don’t even realise we’ve stopped truly living. But eventually, we recognise that we’re merely existing, not thriving. We neglect what brings us joy, leaving us feeling unfulfilled and disconnected.
Living on autopilot can negatively impact mental health, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. The key to breaking this cycle is to regain control—to switch off autopilot and become fully present in our lives.
To fully engage with your life, you must take back control. Here’s how:
1. Become Aware of Your Patterns
Ask yourself: Are you living on autopilot by choice, or has it become your default? Do you actively make decisions, or do you let habit determine what you watch, eat, or do each day? Increase self-awareness by journaling or taking notes on your behaviour. Recognising patterns is the first step to reclaiming control.
Be patient with yourself—change takes time.
2. Live with Purpose
What is your destination in life? How do you want to be remembered? As the saying goes, “Choose something worth dying for, and live for it.” Your purpose should guide your actions, helping you avoid distractions and meaningless shortcuts.
Keeping your purpose in focus brings intention to your everyday activities.
3. Find Meaning in Your Routines
There’s nothing wrong with letting life flow naturally—but problems arise when autopilot dictates your path. Habits enhance efficiency, but they should align with your goals and values.
Don’t let routines control you; instead, infuse them with mindfulness and intention.
4. Pause and Reflect
Just as pulling the reins slows a horse, taking a pause creates space for awareness. Stop and ask yourself:
-
- What do I enjoy?
-
- Am I engaged in what I’m doing?
-
- Am I focused or distracted?
-
- Why do I feel this way?
We often become prisoners of our busy minds—pausing helps us break free.
5. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Autopilot makes life predictable, but it also leads to stagnation. Growth happens when you push beyond your limits. Challenge yourself. Try new things. Experience discomfort—it is a doorway to self-discovery.
You don’t need to skydive to feel alive; small, continuous changes lead to transformation.
6. Make Thoughtful Decisions
For simple choices, trusting your gut (System 1 thinking) works well. But when uncertainty arises, take the time to think critically. Avoid cognitive biases—challenge the first answer that comes to mind. Your brain often prefers the easiest conclusion, not the best one.
For important decisions, slow down and evaluate all options.
7. Shift from FEAR to DARE
Sometimes, we use autopilot as an excuse to avoid discomfort. When you don’t acknowledge a problem, you don’t feel the need to change. FEAR manifests as:
-
- Fighting Change
-
- Excuses
-
- Avoidance
-
- Repetition
The antidote? DARE:
-
- Discovery
-
- Autonomy
-
- Reframing
-
- Experimentation
Be authentic. Be courageous. Dare to embrace change.
